USA Gen Petraeus hands over command in Afghanistan
KABUL:Usa General David Petraeus handed over command of American and coalition forces in Afghanistan to Gen John Allen on Monday, transferring responsibility for the nearly 10-year war as Kabul's international allies draw up exit plans from the conflict.
Petraeus steps down after a mixed one-year stint in charge of the more than 140,000 international troops in the country. He was the architect of the strategy that aimed to bring peace through an emphasis on protecting the local population and decisive strikes against insurgents.
But as he leaves, it is unclear whether the strategy has made Afghanistan safer. Violent attacks have continued, though international military officials argue they are not as widespread or as intense as they would have been otherwise.
Allen, who officially took command at a ceremony in Kabul on Monday morning, said the drawdown of U.S. forces that started earlier this month and the transition of some areas to Afghan control this week does not mean that international forces are easing up in their campaign to defeat the Taliban insurgency.
"It is my intention to maintain the momentum of the campaign," Allen said at the handover ceremony in the Afghan capital. He said however, that he does not expect the fight to be easy.
"There will be tough days ahead. I have no illusions about the challenges ahead," said Allen, who was promoted to a four-star general shortly before the handover ceremony.
Petraeus, who is retiring from the military to become the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and American officials in the US have trumpeted success in reclaiming Taliban strongholds in southern Afghanistan and training Afghan security forces as signs that they are finally making progress toward peace in Afghanistan. But violent attacks have continued, including a number of high-profile assaults and assassinations in recent weeks.

Happy birthday Kat! indain film actors
MUMBAI: It's actor Katrina Kaif's 27TH birthday today, but seems like the recent terror attacks in the city have put a dampener on her plans to party. Though the actor still maintains that she's no party animal, she does admit that it's a good excuse to get together with family and friends, adding that one of her best gifts this year has been her film's release on the eve of her birthday.
The actor has plans to have a muted get-together sometime later, but only if the rest of the cast of her latest film doesn't surprise her first.
As for her other birthday plans through the day, the actor reveals that she has nothing planned as of now. This time around, two of Kat's sisters are expected to fly down from the UK to join their elder sis and Kat's excited about spending it with them. But she doesn't rule out spending the day having some girlie fun.
However, not many are aware that the actor — like her good friend actor Salman Khan — also indulges in charity on the day, even though she may not spend a day with any NGO.

indain film actors Priyanka Chopra turns 29 today
MUMBAI: It’s Priyanka Chopra’s birthday today. The gorgeous Cancerian turns 29 but doesn’t plan to throw a big bash.
Priyanka Chopra has just returned to Mumbai after a prolonged stay abroad which began with IIFA Toronto in June, followed by a vacation in Los Angeles. But just before her birthday, the actress has returned to Mumbai to shoot some scenes of Ra.One with Shahrukh Khan.
On her birthday she plans to spend time with her family members and friends. It’s no secret that Priyanka hates throwing parties and hasn’t hosted a single bash after the one for Gerard Butler in April 2009. So the actress won’t be throwing a lavish bash; rather some of her friends and colleagues -- most likely Shahrukh Khan -- are expected to surprise her with a party.
The birthday could partly be a working day for Priyanka. But she’ll keep herself free in the evening.
We hear that Priyanka’s mom has already given her a few pre-birthday gifts during her stay in Los Angeles.
Priyanka is presently looking forward to a number of films, including Don 2, Agneepath, Barfee and Krrish 2. There’s also an untitled film with Shahid Kapoo
