Gaga's ‘Judas’ battles Rihanna for top spot

LOS ANGELES: It looks like we've got an old-fashioned diva battle for No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart next week.

Lady Gaga's "Judas," which leaked to the Web Friday morning was rush-released to the iTunes Store and could possibly debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 next week.

Up until Friday morning, it seemed like Rihanna was on course for her 10th No. 1 with "S&M," powered by strong sales and airplay of the track's "Rih-mix" featuring Britney Spears. Industry prognosticators are forecasting the song may sell nearly 300,000 downloads by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, April 17, up from the 141,000 the track scanned in its last pre-remix week.

Rihanna was seemingly poised to topple Katy Perry's "E.T" (featuring Kanye West), which has spent the past three weeks in the pole position on the tally. Perry's track will likely move between 260,000 and 270,000 downloads.

But now, Gaga has found herself in the fight for No. 1. While "Judas" was originally slated to debut worldwide next week, this morning's leak prompted Interscope Records, Gaga's label, to rush release the single to digital services.

Billboard projects that "Judas" would have to sell north of 350,000 -- close to 400,000 -- with less than two and-a-half days of sales in the week, in order to possibly debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100. Also playing a role in its initial Hot 100 ranking will be the radio audience impressions "Judas" will garner through the end of the airplay tracking period which runs through April 19. A fast first week start at radio, similar to "Born This Way" (78.6 million), would certainly help Gaga's No. 1 cause.

It's certainly possible that "Judas" could sell that much, based on the how well Gaga's last release, "Born This Way," sold in its first three days of release (after a Friday, February 11 iTunes debut). It bowed with 447,000, enabling its No. 1 debut on the Hot 100, marking her third chart-topper and the 1,000th No. 1 in the chart's history.

However, "Judas" is hobbled, to a degree, in that it was posted to iTunes later in the day than "Born This Way" was. The latter hit the retailer in the early morning, while "Judas" hit the store by late morning Pacific Standard Time. (Reuters)

World's oldest man dies

SALMON: A 114-year-old retired railroad worker reputed to be the world's oldest living man died of natural causes on Thursday in the farming community of Great Falls, Montana.
World
Walter Breuning, who had lived in a local nursing home since 1980, was declared oldest man on July 18, 2009, by the Guinness Book of World Records.

"I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend and a great Montanan, Walter Breuning," Governor Brian Schweitzer said in a statement. "He was wise even beyond his years."

Breuning was born September 21, 1896, in Melrose, Minnesota, and spent most of his early life in South Dakota before taking a job with the Great Northern Railway in 1913, according to the Rainbow Senior Living retirement home in Great Falls.

He moved to Montana in 1918 to clerk for the railway and married Agnes Twokey, a telegraph operator, four years later.

He retired from the railroad at age 66. He attributed his longevity to restricting daily meals to breakfast and lunch and to downing an aspirin a day.

In recent years, Breuning attracted a following, appearing on "News Hour with Jim Lehrer" in 2009 and participating in a question-and-answer segment in the magazine "Men's Journal."

"He was one of the kindest gentlemen and one of the humblest," said Stacia Kirby, spokeswoman for the Rainbow.

Kirby said Breuning's mind was lucid to the end and he had told his caretakers he was unafraid of death.

"Walter taught me that all things in moderation will help lead to a long life; that hard work and a modest living are enough for a happy life and most importantly that giving back to others is good for the soul," Schweitzer said. (Reuters)

22 dead as tornadoes rip across US

CHICAGO: At least 22 people have been killed as a powerful storm whipped up tornadoes in its third day across parts of the southern, central and eastern United States, local media reported Saturday.
22 dead as tornadoes rip across US
At least five people were killed as tornadoes left a trail of destruction in North Carolina on Saturday, leveling homes and businesses and knocking out power, NBC television reported.

One person was killed in Alabama's Marengo Country while six more died in Autauga and Washington Counties, MSNBC television reported.

The storm toppled trees and power lines, tore roofs off houses and scattered tractor-trailers across highways.

Two dozen tornadoes were reported in the southern states of Mississippi and Alabama on Friday, a day after 15 twisters struck in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, the National Weather Service said.

Many of Friday's deaths were in rural areas of Arkansas, where seven people were killed, and most of the damage was caused by falling trees.

But the storm was powerful enough to lift a double-wide trailer into the air and toss it about 70 feet (21 meters), killing a 65-year-old woman and critically injuring a 70-year-old man inside.

"Three of the seven victims were seven years of age or younger," said Tommy Jackson, spokesman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management.

"It's quite sad."

Falling trees killed a mother and her seven-year-old child in a house in Little Rock city, while a father and his infant son died in their mobile home in Garland County, Jackson said.

A six-year-old child was also killed when a tree fell on a White County house and a man was killed when a tree crashed on his trailer in Pulasky County.

Two other people were killed in Oklahoma when a major twister tore through Atoka County.

"It's pretty extensive," said Laura Taylor of the county sheriff's office. "There are several houses destroyed. The school is pretty much leveled and there's two confirmed dead."

Another person was killed in Greene County, Mississippi, according to local media.

Meanwhile, North Dakota struggled to contain near-record flooding of the Red River. (AFP)
